Papaya – Lechoza
The papaya is native to the Americas. The Spanish found it growing in Hispaniola and the mame comes from the Taino Indian. It is now grown all over the world. Hawaiian small papayas are very popular in the US. Unfortunately, I never buy them here because they are picked too grin and never ripen correctly. Most of the time they turn yello but stay hard and bitter. When I visit the DR I eat papayas any time I can.
When I was a kid we used the stems of the leaves as straws or to bliw bubbles. They are very bitter though and some of us would get allergies to the latex it releases.
The trees are just beautiful.
