Adding New Blog Articles

Joomla Article Manager

If you have an older site, you will be using the Joomla native Article Manager. If you have a newer site, it is most likely using K2. (Skip the Joomla Articles instructions and go to the K2 instructions.)

Go to the Article Manager. Click on the Big Green New Button.

Under Title Name the article the exact title that is going to display in the front end. (live)

Leave Alias blank. Joomla fills it up automatically.

Under Category, choose the Blog Category. This will tell the server to display it in the Blogs page.

You may add Tags also that are related to the page content. (Don't repeat tags that you have used in other pages that are not relevant to this page.)

Copy and paste your content in the JCE Editor Content Tab. Please don't copy and paste directly from Microsoft Word. You will not be happy with the results. It adds hidden spacing that you can't delete.

Enter a page break. The page break generates a Read More button and cuts the content where you enter it. Then people can click on the Read more button to go to the actual item and read the story. The Gallery is not displayed in the listing or in the homepage.

Choose a main image for your article. The image should be around 900 pixels wide at 72 dpi (for Web). Click here to read more about working with Web Images.

Click on the Images and Links Tab. Click on Intro Image and select the image you want to be the main article image. This is the smaller image that will display in the Blogs landing page. You should add an Alt Text for the Search Engines and the handicapped. (Alt Text is the text you see in a PC when you mouse over an image). They are not visible in Macintosh.

Next go to the Full Article Image and choose the same image. Enter the same Alt Text.

Next go to Publishing and enter a Metadata description and keywords.

Save your article and click on the blogs menu in the front end of your site. Your page is now live.

TIPS:

The blogs are set to load the latest at the top. That latest blog also loads in the homepage. And, the last 5 latest blogs are featured on the sidebar of the blogs pages. Blogs don’t need to be very long and they don’t need to have an image gallery. But, it is available. They however, need to have a main image.

Images for blogs and all other items are no larger than 900 pixels wide at 72 dpi. It is better to use a horizontal image for the main image.

Blogs are a great way to keep your site updated and indexed by the search engines. Sites that don’t have any new content for a long time become dead sites and stop being indexed. It is recommended that a new blog is added, at least, every 3 months.
